Today, science education has become a fundamental national policy and a primary focus for countries worldwide to enhance citizens' scientific literacy and to build a strong nation in science and technology. China's science education reform has entered a new period of rapid development. Establishing high-level academic journals and providing an equal, open, and authoritative platform for academic exchange are essential for the advancement of any discipline. At this pivotal moment, the Institute of Education and the Tao Xingzhi School of Teacher Education at Nanjing University jointly launched the journal Science Education Research in May,2025. The mission of this journal is to develop theories of science education grounded in Chinese practices but with an international perspective, to build a research community that reflects the current Chinese context composed of scientists, university faculty, the unique Chinese teaching research staff, and classroom teachers. This community aims to serve science teaching practices, support the professional development of science teachers, and elevate the level of science education research in China. The editorial policy of this journal is to integrate theory with practice, combine domestic and international perspectives, merge science education with mathematics and engineering education, and connect basic education with higher education.
The journal features permanent columns such as: Scientists' Forum, Curriculum & Teaching Materials Research, Learning Science and Technology, Science Education Discipline Development, STEM and Interdisciplinary Teaching, Global Perspectives, Exploration & Debating, Teacher Professional Development, Curriculum Resources & Technological Support, Informal Science Education, Teaching Research Staff Workshop, Regional Experimental Achievements Exchange, and Instructional Design Competition.
