Marxist Philosophy: The discipline of Marxist Philosophy is currently recognized as a national key discipline, and is a core discipline of the "Marxist Social Theory Research Center," a key research base for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, it is a backbone discipline of "Research on Contemporary Capitalism," which belongs to the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Science Innovation Base. In the 1970s, the thesis "Practice is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth," mainly authored by Hu Fuming, triggered a grand discussion on the concept of truth. The discipline currently has 9 doctoral supervisors and 12 master's degrees supervisors.

Aiming to open new frontiers of Marxist philosophy for 21st-century China, the discipline is firmly rooted in the classic works of Marxism. It is dedicated to original research in the history of Marxist philosophy, innovative research in contemporary Chinese Marxist philosophy, and resolving significant contemporary world and Chinese issues using basic Marxist philosophical methodologies. It has produced landmark achievements including Exploring the Explorer's Road, Back to Marx, History of Understanding Capitalism, and Current Trends in Foreign Marxist Philosophy.

In recent years, the discipline has continuously explored and innovated in areas such as research on Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, studies and digital archiving of classical Marxist literature, research on current foreign Marxist thought and criticism of contemporary capitalism, and teaching reform to enhance understanding of Marxist philosophy. These efforts have led to extensive academic influence and social response.

Chinese Philosophy: Chinese Philosophy is a discipline that studies the development, characteristics, and laws of Chinese philosophical thought. The research areas of this discipline include Chinese Buddhism, Confucian philosophy, and the relationships between the Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist doctrines. Currently, there are 4 professors (3 of whom are doctoral supervisors), 4 associate professors, and 1 assistant researcher. The faculty has a robust teaching group, well-balanced in age structure, and exerts a significant influence on teaching and research both at home and abroad.

The discipline is especially characterized and strengthened by studies in Confucianism, Buddhism, and Buddhist ethics. Our research on Chinese Buddhism and the relationship between Confucianism and Buddhism holds a leading position both domestically and internationally. Our faculty members have published over 50 academic monographs and Hongde Academic Journal.

In recent years, the discipline has presided over a number of key projects, including those funded by the National Social Science Fund and the Ministry of Education's key programs. Important original works, such as the world's first comprehensive History of Chinese Buddhism, have been published and have won multiple awards, including the China Government Publishing Award and the Ministry of Education's First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Western Philosophy: Western Philosophy is a specialized discipline that studies the evolution and influence of Western philosophical thought. The main research areas of this discipline are: (1) Western political and legal philosophy; (2) contemporary Anglo-American philosophy; (3) Western applied ethics; (4) Christian philosophy; (5) German classical philosophy; (6) European medieval philosophy; (7) phenomenology; (8) contemporary French philosophy; (9) postmodern trends; (10) epistemology; (11) contemporary philosophy of mind; (12) ancient Greek philosophy.

The main research characteristics and strengths of this discipline include: a wide-ranging and comprehensive approach to research, placing equal emphasis on classical and contemporary philosophy, and focusing on the combination of theory and practice. In addition, each professor and associate professor in this discipline has years of experience as visiting researchers in various countries, thus bringing a wealth of international expertise. Assistant researchers have all studied at well-known overseas universities, where they earned their doctorate degrees, thereby possessing a global perspective. The discipline has obtained remarkable achievements, having undertaken numerous national and provincial-level research topics, and having written, edited, and translated several influential academic monographs.

Logic: The primary research areas of this discipline are modern logic and philosophy of logic, inductive logic and artificial intelligence, scientific logic and dialectical logic, history of Chinese and foreign logical thought, as well as research in logical applications. Notably, we have achieved a series of outcomes that hold a leading position domestically and exert significant influence internationally in areas such as research on generalized logical paradoxes, formal epistemology, modal logic and modal philosophy, the Chinese perspective of Chinese logic, and research on the socio-cultural functions of logic.

In recent years, keeping in step with the needs of our time and society, we have integrated resources within and outside the university to conduct interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research on logic and the philosophy of intelligence, contributing remarkably to promoting multi-level logic education and its popularization in the country. Members of this direction are currently presiding over major and key projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, the Science and Technology Commission of the Central Military Commission, and the Ministry of Education's key research base. We have formed a young, energetic, and vibrant research team, and the overall level of the logic discipline is at the forefront in China.

Ethics: This discipline has made significant progress in the research areas of basic ethical theory, history of Chinese ethical thought, studies on the transition of modern Chinese ethical culture, research on contemporary cutting-edge ethical issues, Marxist moral theory, applied ethics, and exposition and critical research on Western ethical theory.

The research on basic ethical theory and significant ethical frontier issues led by Professor Guo Guangyin, along with the research on the history of Chinese ethical thought and modern Chinese ethical culture transformation under the leadership of Professor Yang Ming that is based in the "Eastern Morality Research Center," has formed a distinctive research perspective that holds considerable influence in the field of ethics.

The discipline combines theoretical research with practical issues in its teaching approach, and will continuously offer advice for economic and social development from the perspective of moral construction.

Religious Studies: This discipline is characterized by studies in Buddhism, Taoism, folk religions, Western religious studies, and religious art. Based on the foundation of theoretical research in religious studies, we offer major courses such as "Taoist Classics Research," "Special Topics in Buddhist Research," "Classics Studies," and "Special Topic Research on Chinese Folk Religion and Beliefs," as well as language courses such as "Greek" and "Sanskrit." Students also have the option to take interdisciplinary courses related to Chinese philosophy, Eastern philosophy, and religious studies.

We have a strong team consisting of four professors, who also serve as PhD supervisors, one associate professor serving as a master's degree supervisor, and one postdoctoral researcher. The team has distinctive research characteristics and a balanced age structure. The leader of the discipline, Professor Xu Xiaoyue, is among the first batch of leading talents in philosophy and social sciences under the national high-level personnel special support plan.

Over the years, this discipline has published over thirty kinds of academic works and hundreds of academic papers in professional journals such as Philosophy Research, World Religious Research, and Religious Studies Research. In addition, we publish an academic series, Religion.

Philosophy of Science and Technology: This discipline primarily conducts research related to the philosophy of science and technology, science, technology and society, and the history of scientific thought. Its predecessor was the Natural Dialectics Teaching and Research Group established in 1959, which jointly offered the course "Marxist Philosophy and Natural Science" with teachers from science majors. From 1978, it began to enroll master's students in Natural Dialectics, and in 2000, it was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in the philosophy of science and technology, cumulatively training over 200 master's and doctoral students.

The discipline currently has 2 professors and 3 associate professors, including one full-time overseas teacher, and it hosts the school-level research unit "Institute for Science, Technology and Society." In recent years, the discipline has not only emphasized research on the theoretical frontiers of the philosophy of science and technology, tracking and participating in relevant frontier topic research, such as the methodology of social sciences, philosophy of scientific practice, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, etc., but has also paid attention to combining theory with practice, using the methodology of philosophy of science and technology to analyze real-life problems, and has produced a series of outcomes.

Eastern Philosophy and Religion: This discipline is guided by Marxist social and cultural theory and is a comprehensive discipline that conducts historical investigation, theoretical research, and comparative analysis on the core philosophies and religions in Eastern culture. It also provides corresponding practical solutions to cultural and religious problems. The discipline has conducted in-depth research on the comparison and integration of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, comparative studies on religious and philosophical related issues between Chinese, Indian, Jewish, and Islamic cultures, and actively promotes the collaboration of various research forces on East Asian culture at Nanjing University.

The discipline boasts a group of academically accomplished and experienced faculty of varying ages. They are not only proficient in the research of Chinese religions and Buddhism, but also have a good reputation in the research of Oriental religious cultures such as Judaism, Islam, Hebraic culture, and Christian culture, which are closely connected with the East. This lays the foundation for the discipline to form an integral vision, and to conduct more comprehensive researches on Oriental studies as well as scientific comparison and analysis. It has built up the strengths of comparative perspective, local characteristics, Western reference, and inclusiveness.
