Professor Lai Yonghai, PhD, is one of Nanjing University’s first Senior Distinguished Professors of Humanities and Social Sciences, a member of the Academic Committee of the University. He is now Director of Nanjing University Chinese Culture Institute, President of Jiangsu Society of Confucian Studies and Chair of Nanjing Buddhist Culture Institute. Professor Lai was recognized as a “Chinese Doctor with Outstanding Contributions” by the State Council’s Academic Degree Committee and the Ministry of Education in 1991, began to receive Special Allowances from the State Council in 1993, and was a member of the Philosophy Steering Group for the fifth and sixth Academic Degree Committees of the State Council. He was elected Top 10 Influential Chinese of Jiangsu Province in 2013 and Top 10 Cultural Celebrities of Nanjing in 2015. Ever since he was appointed a PhD supervisor by the State Council’s Academic Degree Committee in 1993, Professor Lai has supervised 73 doctors of philosophy, including 16 from outside the Chinese mainland. He has published 18 books, including The Chinese Buddhahood and Buddhist Culture in China. The Chinese Buddhahood was included in the China Classics International Translation Project by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television in 2013. A Comprehensive History of Buddhism in China, the world’s first complete work on the subject, edited by Professor Lai, won First Prize of Outstanding Works in Humanities and Social Sciences awarded by the Ministry of Education, the Chinese Government Award for Publishing, and the Original Books Award granted by the central government of China.
