Key Laboratory of Mesoscopic Chemistry(Nanjing University), Ministry of Education

Since the 1990s, mesoscopic system, between macroscopic condensed matter and microscopic atoms and molecules, has drawn the attention of science and technology field, industry field and governments all around the world. Compared with the traditional macro and micro systems, mesoscopic system possesses some new properties, function laws and important application prospects, which provides a new perspective for people to understand the world: from macroscopic, microscopic to mesoscopic. Mesoscopic field has rapidly developed to be the cutting edge of interdiscipline, due to the need of economic and high-tech development and the internal results of modern science and technology development.

In 1996, Nanjing University established the Institute of Mesoscopic Solid State Chemistry by combining some related research directions of national key disciplines.

In 1998, Nanjing University established Research Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology which involved physics and chemistry researchers, and some from other disciplines like electronic science, material science, biology and medicine.

Based on School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, combining “211 project” and Key university construction projects, mesoscopic chemical discipline group was constructed. This discipline group is interdisciplinary and vigorous, involving researchers from four national key disciplines (physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry and macromolecular chemistry), and five doctoral programs (physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, macromolecular chemistry and organic chemistry).

The laboratory focuses on the experimental and theoretical study of the preparation, design, and mechanism of mesoscopic materials, combining the cutting edge of the fields like energy science, environmental sciences, life sciences and information management.

The laboratory advocates deepening the understanding of the theories and gaining outstanding achievements in the applications by interdisciplinary cooperation.
