Abstract:
   Worldwide, the number of persons with obesity has more than doubled since 1980. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. In 2014, 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight and 13% were obese. Most of the world's population lives in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight. Prevention and treatment of obesity is one of the top health priorities for the World Health Organization. Obesity is closely linked to many other chronic diseases such as diabetes which are all preventable. While obesity is prevalent worldwide, changes in local socioeconomic status, diet and lifestyle due to globalization have been linked to current epidemic. As a chronic disease obesity affects men and women differently, the role for prevention and control may also rest in gender specific roles.
